The first step

See if it is already listed. Search and explore every listing on this site by name, place, style or history, or use the National Park Service's records below.
Read nominations like it. A nomination makes its case the way others did: the same criteria, the same kind of history and description. Read the nominations of listed places like yours, from this site, NPGallery, the National Archives or your state's own copies.
Contact your state office. Every nomination goes through the state historic preservation office (or a tribal or federal one). Many ask for a short questionnaire first, and they will tell you whether the place is likely to qualify and what comes next.
Write the nomination with them. The form and its guide are below. Owners, neighbours, historians and volunteers write nominations, not only professionals.
